Landscapes of Memory - Decolonial Museum
Project Overview

Set within the iconic Kirstenbosch gardens, the project proposes a decolonialized museum that acknowledges the conflicted past of the site while celebrating its rich biodiversity. The museum seeks to mediate between the beauty of the landscape and the suppressed stories of the Bushmen and KhoiKhoi who once inhabited the land.

Design Intent

Using locally sourced materials and a camouflaged architectural language, the design minimizes intrusion into the sensitive landscape. Visitors move through the museum in reverse chronological order, culminating in a central exhibit overlooking the lily pond - a symbolic space tying together ecological and cultural histories. The scheme is rooted in careful storytelling and environmental sensitivity, embedding memory in space.
